One of these starter matches should be all that's required to get a fire pit's fire burning. To ignite each pit, we used Diamond Strike-a-Fire fire starters that were available at our neighborhood Kroger supermarket. We then stacked the logs together so at least some portion of each was touching the others. For a consistent amount, we selected three split log lengths roughly 15 inches long. To test each fire pit, we used the same fuel, Simple Simon Premium Hardwood sourced from a local Lowe's. There's no waiting for the fire to get going it's just the heat you want when you want it. One big advantage of a gas fire pit is instant heat. They also help keep the heat going, even if you turn the gas off to conserve it. The Firebowl also comes with lava rocks, perfect for creating the illusion of a bonfire, as they add carbon to the flame, making it yellow instead of blue. A fire pit that can start the evening on a low setting for the ambiance and finish it with a roaring fire to keep the chill away is a luxury that wood burners don't offer. It gives off a significant amount of heat because it is gas, heat can be adjusted as needed. The Firebowl has a nice long hose to keep your gas tank away from the open flame, so it is safe to use. This 19-inch fire pit from Outdoor Living fits neatly on a table or the ground and is perfect for people who already use propane for their grills or patio heaters. Most of the prefabricated fireboxes utilize them for insulating. While most of our selections are wood-burning fire pits, there is something to be said for propane choices. This type of mortar is fire retardant insulating mortar. New and replacement fireplace refractory panels are made from refractory mortar. Reflector shields also make the fire more efficient with pushing more heat out of the fireplace. There is a reflector shield that can be purchased to stand in front of the panels to protect the refractory panels from cracking. Often homeowners will have their panels replaced and crack them within the first couple of fires. A stress crack can occur and very quickly become a crack separating the refractory panel into multiple pieces. This settling can crack the panels due to a new piece of wood sitting on top of the fire crashing into the refractory walls. Panels do not carry any kind of warranty, mainly because firewood is settling on the side walls and back panel when it burns. However, some fireboxes have glued in panels or tricky installation of the refractory panels. Then placing it and re-installing the bracket. Often a large replacement panel can be cut down to make both of the sides of the firebox. They come in three sizes, large, medium, and small. Replacement panels are made to be cut down to fit any firebox. Then measuring and cutting down a new panel to size. The replacement itself does not take that long it normally consists of removing a few screws that hold a bracket in place, removing the bracket and taking the damaged panel out. A certified chimney professional will be able to identify the signs of damage to the refractory panels and replace them, hopefully before any damage to the firebox has occurred. The best thing to do is get your fireplace inspected routinely. This is because the areas that have warped are now closer in areas than the half inch and can create house fires. If warping has occurred the solution at that point becomes replacing the chimney insert. When a panel is cracked or damaged the heat is no longer blocked in that area, with the heat being in contact with the sheet metal directly it can cause the firebox and chimney to warp. Those cracks and stress signs are what can cause you problems that you don’t want. Replacement refractory panels take a lot of stress from the heat of the fire and, just like anything under enough stress, can crack and even have chunks start falling off. If you have a pre-fabricated or zero clearance fireplace this is a part of the firebox that needs constant attention. How do you know if you need to replace your fireplace refractory panels? The refractory fireplace panels add insulation between the fire and the rest of your home. Pre-fabricated chimneys can have as little as a half of an inch space between them and other 2x4s and wood in your home’s structure. Replacement fireplace refractory panels are a common fireplace repair.įireplace refractory panels act as a barrier to keep the sheet metal in your fireplace from getting too hot and warping or, in worse scenarios, causing fires in your home.
